Walker Buehler News
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler was knocked around against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, taking the loss in a 4-0 defeat. Buehler pitched just 3 IP and allowed three runs. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out two. The 29-year-old was making his second start on the season after coming back from Tommy John surgery, and although it wasn't a disastrous outing, it certainly wasn't encouraging either. His limited pitch count and overall rustiness are to be expected, but fantasy managers were likely looking for a step in the right direction from his last outing, and that didn't happen on either front. It might be a while before we see the Walker Buehler that competed for a Cy Young, if we even see him at all this year.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (elbow) will make his return from Tommy John surgery on Monday to face the Miami Marlins, according to manager Dave Roberts. Buehler will come off the 15-day injured for his first start of 2024 after having elbow reconstruction in August of 2022. The 29-year-old didn't pitch at all in the big leagues last year. Because of his long layoff, fantasy managers may want to temper expectations, but if Buehler returns to his pre-injury form, he could be the difference-maker for fantasy staffs. In his six minor-league starts, he had a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP with nine walks and 21 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings. Rust should be expected from Buehler, but his first start against Miami will be a great matchup for fantasy purposes.
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler (elbow) made perhaps his final minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts over five innings. After throwing 75 pitches in this outing, Buehler should be on the cusp of rejoining LA's rotation and making his highly-anticipated 2024 regular-season debut following a long road back from Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers will make a final decision in the coming days on where his next start will come, but the 29-year-old star right-hander should be available to fantasy managers in early May. When we last saw him back in the 2022 season, Buehler logged a 4.02 ERA (3.80 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, and 58:17 K:BB over 65 frames (12 starts). Landon Knack is making Tuesday's start against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks, and it may very well be his last with the major-league roster for now.

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler didn't throw a pitch in the MLB in 2023. This comes after making 12 starts in 2022. Though the 29-year-old has missed time and wasn't great in 2022, fantasy managers have some hope to hang onto. Buehler looked like a bonafide ace from 2018-2021. He was a 16-game winner in '21 with a WHIP under one and a 2.47 ERA. His career 27% strikeout rate is well above league average, as are most of his advanced metrics. It will be hard to expect him to pitch a full season in 2023 after coming off his second Tommy John surgery. His 104 ranking by RotoBaller should be a good place to grab him in upcoming drafts, as his potential and risk need to be weighed this season. Buehler can handle an ace's workload and return ace value, so 104 isn't a bad place to target him. Just be cognizant of the fact he may not toss 180+ innings this season. As of mid-January, he is not 100% on schedule to return by Opening Day and he may make his first start in May.
