Ross Stripling News
Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (finger) was originally scheduled to make his Cactus League debut with his new team on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he is being pushed back a few days with what manager Mark Kotsay described as a minor cut on his right index finger. Instead, Mitch Spence, a Rule 5 draft pick, replaced Stripling on the mound. The injury to Stripling's finger doesn't sound serious at all. The 34-year-old is locked into Oakland's starting rotation in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. He'll be moving to another pitcher-friendly environment, but that's about where the positives end. Stripling doesn't miss many bats and won't get much run support from the A's offense. He's outside of RotoBaller's top-100 fantasy starting pitchers.
Oakland Athletics general manager David Forst said that left-hander Alex Wood and right-hander Ross Stripling are viewed as starters with spring training right around the corner. In addition to Wood and Stripling, Paul Blackburn and JP Sears are at the top of the team's rotation for 2024. The A's signed Wood to a one-year, $8.5 million deal last weekend. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw pitched in a hybrid role with the Giants in 2023 and had a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 74 K's and 42 walks in 97 2/3 frames. Oakland's pitcher-friendly ballpark should help, but Wood has very limited fantasy appeal with diminished velocity and stuff. He'll only be useful in deep AL-only leagues. Stripling was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Friday. He disappointed in San Fran with a 5.36 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 70 K's and 16 innings as a swingman. Like Wood, Stripling has very little fantasy upside.
The San Francisco Giants have traded pitcher Ross Stripling to the Oakland A's in exchange for infielder/outfielder Jonah Cox. The veteran right-hander authored a 5.36 ERA across 22 outings (11 starts) with the Giants in the 2023 season but also tossed a 3.01 ERA across 32 appearances (24 starts) with the Blue Jays as recently as the 2022 campaign. Stripling's biggest asset is his control as he has walked just 5.5% of the batters he has faced in his big-league career despite punching out only 21.9% of the batters he has faced. All told, the 34-year-old owns a 3.96 ERA across 226 MLB outings (115 starts) in stints with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Giants.

Right-hander Ross Stripling enjoyed arguably his best season in the Majors in 2022, making 32 appearances for the Toronto Blue Jays. Of those 32 appearances, 24 were starts. All told, the 32-year-old logged a 3.01 ERA, a 3.11 FIP, 111 strikeouts, and just 20 walks in 134.1 innings of work. The right-hander also registered 10 pitcher wins and a save. Now a member of the San Francisco Giants after signing with the National League West club as a free agent, Stripling should have some quality fantasy upside heading into 2023. In the five seasons in which the starter has logged at least 90 innings, he's logged an ERA south of the 4.00 mark four different times. Elsewhere, Stripling finished in the 98th percentile in walk rate last year with a 3.7% metric and now gets to pitch half of his games at spacious Oracle Park. And while the former Blue Jay didn't post gaudy strikeout numbers in his last season in Toronto, there's a lot to like here as a late-round rotation option for fantasy managers.
