J.D. Davis News
The Oakland Athletics reinstated infielder J.D. Davis (thigh) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned infielder Nick Allen to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. The A's also selected the contract of infielder Brett Harris from Vegas and moved right-hander Freddy Tarnok (hip) to the 60-day IL. Davis is playing first base on Friday night and hitting fifth in his return against Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers. The 31-year-old corner infielder will return to a weak .196/.255/.373 slash line with two home runs and two RBI, but he's worth rostering in AL-only leagues as he should be a regular for the A's at either corner infield spot. Davis went 3-for-15 in four minor-league rehab games with Vegas.
Oakland Athletics third baseman J.D. Davis (thigh) will continue his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas through at least this Thursday. Davis played in his first rehab game with Vegas on Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a strikeout as the designated hitter. The A's would like to see him play in several more games down on the farm and return to the field before they consider activating him from the 10-day injured list. The 31-year-old veteran should eventually return to everyday duties for the A's at third base when he's healthy. In his first 14 games for the A's before getting hurt, he went just 10-for-51 (.196) with two home runs and two RBI in 55 plate appearances. Darrell Hernaiz has been playing often at the hot corner of late with Davis sidelined.
Oakland Athletics infielder J.D. Davis (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday, and outfielder Esteury Ruiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Davis exited Sunday's 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals due to a strained right groin, and he'll need to spend some time on the shelf. The 30-year-old was operating as Oakland's primary third baseman, but he's batting just .196 (10-for-51) with two solo home runs over 14 games this year. The speedy Ruiz is available off the bench for the A's on Monday and could eventually reclaim his spot as the club's everyday center fielder after a spell in the minor leagues. The 25-year-old contact hitter slashed .326/.423/.581 with three homers, eight RBI, and seven stolen bases across 51 plate appearances in the minors, and he led the American League with 67 swipes a year ago. Ruiz should be added in fantasy for steals where available.

Third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis took a step back in 2020. In what was expected to be a breakout season, Davis posted just a .247 batting average to go with six home runs and 19 RBI in 190 at-bats. Extrapolated over the course of a full 162-game season, Davis' production only equated to a 16 HR, 50 RBI campaign. Davis' power struggles resulted from decreased line drive and fly ball rates, a drop in overall barrel rate, a huge overall launch angle dip to 3.3 degrees down from 10.6 degrees in 2019, and a groundball rate that rose to 56.3% from 47% in 2019. Notably, Davis posted an elite exit velocity of 96.1 mph on FB/LD, which was in the top-20 in all of MLB for qualified batters. While this suggests a 2021 HR rebound, his groundball tendencies, if not addressed, could cap such positive regression. Davis' lower batting average in 2020 resulted from a much lower contact rate outside the zone and continued issues with the breaking ball, hitting only .150 against such offerings. Looking to 2021, Davis should see a rebound in HR totals, though expectations should be tempered due to GB%. Based on his other 2020 hitting metrics, Davis should also see positive regression in batting average, particularly if he can get his contact rate outside the zone closer to his career average. That said, Davis will remain more valuable in on-base-percentage formats where he maintained solid on-base skills in 2020 behind a 13.5% walk rate (up from 8.4% in 2019). With a current 214 ADP, Davis can provide managers with boring but solid returns in the later rounds of drafts. Managers can reasonably expect around 20-22 HR, 60-70 RBI, and an average close to .270 from the Mets regular third baseman.
