J.P. Crawford News
Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford (oblique, hand) exited Wednesday's minor-league rehab game at Triple-A Tacoma after getting hit in the hand by a pitch. Making his first appearance on his rehab assignment on Wednesday, Crawford was hit in the right hand and immediately needed to come out of the contest in the fifth inning. The M's expected Crawford to be ready to rejoin the major-league roster by the time Friday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles rolled around, but the 29-year-old's return from a strained right oblique may be delayed depending on the severity of this setback with his hand. Look for Seattle to provide for clarity on Crawford's status sometime following the game, and the infielder should be considered day-to-day until more is known. UPDATE: It sounds like the Mariners have a low concern with Crawford's injury, but it's unclear how it might affect his potential activation this weekend.
Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford (oblique) will play in one more minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Tacoma and then will presumably join the Mariners for their weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles, which begins on Friday, according to manager Scott Servais. Crawford was put on the 10-day injured list on April 25 with a Grade 1 right-oblique strain, but he's nearing his return. The 29-year-old went 1-for-4 in his first rehab game for Tacoma on Tuesday while playing seven innings at shortstop. Dylan Moore has been seeing starts at the 6 with Crawford sidelined, but he'll shift back to a utility role for the M's once Crawford is activated from the IL. When activated, Crawford's fantasy managers in deeper leagues will hope he can turn things around after starting the year 17-for-86 (.198) with two homers and nine RBI in 22 games.
Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford (oblique) is set to start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. Crawford has been participating in full pregame workouts, and the rehab assignment will be the final step in his recovery from a strained right oblique. Barring any setbacks, he'll likely be activated when the club begins a road trip starting on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles. After hitting just .196 (13-for-86) with two home runs, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored as Seattle's primary leadoff hitter this season, the 29-year-old on-base machine will only be a viable fantasy option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues when he returns. Utility man Josh Rojas has taken over as the preferred leadoff man against right-handed pitching, slashing a potent .385/.439/.596 with five extra-base hits, four RBI, and three stolen bases over his last 15 games (52 at-bats), and he's worth holding until Crawford is cleared.

Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford rewarded fantasy managers who took a shot on him after years of mediocre production in 2023. In his age-28 season, Crawford hit .266 with 19 home runs, more than he hit in the previous two seasons combined (15). Add in an impressive 14.7% BB%, 94 runs, and a .818 OPS, and Crawford out-performed by a mile a season ago. However, don't expect the same production this season. The 29-year-old ranked in the 29th percentile or worse in xSLG, average exit velocity, hard-hit rate, and barrel rate. His bat-handling skills and plate discipline are well above average but his power numbers should regress. ATC projects 12 home runs from him in 2024 but he should be a solid source of runs and walks as the everyday leadoff hitter in Seattle.
