Devin Sweet News
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Devin Sweet has cleared waivers and has been outrighted off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Toledo. Sweet was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed infield prospect Colt Keith to a six-year contract extension, meaning they had to place him on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has spent time with four organizations over the past four months as he has spent time with the Mariners, A's, Giants, and Tigers organizations. Sweet appeared in seven MLB games between the Mariners and A's last season but struggled to a 10.38 ERA in that time while surrendering four homers and six walks versus six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings of work. He spent the bulk of the 2023 season at Double-A with Seattle, tossing a stout 1.54 ERA and big-time 28.7% K-BB% across 27 appearances.
The Detroit Tigers have designated pitcher Devin Sweet for assignment. The move was made to create a 40-man roster spot for infield prospect Colt Keith who signed a six-year contract extension with the club before making his MLB debut, likely to come on Opening Day this season. It wasn't a long stay on Detroit's 40-man roster for Sweet who the club claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Jan. 18. The right-hander struggled to an ugly 10.38 ERA across seven appearances in his big-league debut for the Mariners and A's in 2023 before being claimed off waivers by San Francisco. However, he did post a 2.25 ERA across 36 games in the minors between the three organizations in 2023 and should generate more interest on waivers if the Tigers do not retain him.
The Detroit Tigers have claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and subsequently designated infielder Tyler Nevin for assignment. Sweet, 27, made his big-league debut with the Mariners and A's in the 2023 season, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits and six walks against six strikeouts across just 8 2/3 frames between the two clubs. He spent the bulk of the season at Double-A within the Mariners organization, tossing a stealth 1.54 ERA alongside a massive 28.7% K-BB% in 27 relief outings. Nevin, 26, appeared in 41 games with the Tigers last season but hit just .200 with two home runs and a .622 OPS across 111 plate appearances. He's a lifetime .203 hitter with five homers and a .611 OPS across 313 big-league plate appearances between the Tigers and Baltimore Orioles.
