Mark Canha News
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha (illness) is back in the starting lineup on Friday as the designated hitter and is batting third against the visiting Houston Astros and left-hander Framber Valdez. Canha missed two games earlier this week while battling an upper-respiratory illness, but he's obviously feeling better now and is back in there for the series opener this weekend in Detroit. The 35-year-old veteran outfielder/designated hitter is batting .248 (29-for-117) on the year with five home runs and 16 RBI in his 34 games played. Canha has had decent success against left-handed pitchers in his career and shouldn't be ignored in this one in DFS now that he's past his illness. In his 14 career at-bats against Valdez, he's hitting .286 with one RBI as well.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha (illness) is out of the starting lineup again on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians due to an upper respiratory infection. "He's not feeling well. It hasn't been a great road trip health-wise (for the team), so we're kind of quarantining him at this point to get him away from the rest of us until further notice," manager A.J. Hinch said. It will be the second straight game missed for the 35-year-old, who is hitting .248 (29-for-117) so far in 2024 with five home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored for the Tigers. Check back on Friday to see if Canha is feeling good enough to play in the series opener against the Houston Astros after a scheduled off day on Thursday. Colt Keith will serve as the designated hitter and will bat fifth on Wednesday against Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha will take a seat on Monday in the series opener against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. With Canha starting on the bench, Matt Vierling will draw into the starting lineup, playing right field and batting sixth against Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller. Vierling hasn't recorded a hit in just two career at-bats versus Keller and has just three hits in 17 at-bats (.176) with a solo home run and four strikeouts in his first six games of the season. The 35-year-old Canha should be back in Detroit's starting lineup on Tuesday after starting his first year in Detroit by going 6-for-28 (.214) with two long balls, four RBI, a stolen base, four runs scored and eight strikeouts in 36 trips to the plate over his first nine games.

As the years have gone on, Mark Canha has developed into quite a good player. The peak of his performance came in the 2019 season, where everything seemed to click, and he ended up with a whopping 146 wRC+ in 126 games. Canha's power had quietly been developing in that span, and in 2019 he set new career highs in barrel (9.5%) and hard-hit rate (41.1%) en route to his power increase. He also developed into something of a walk machine, with a 13.5% walk rate, among the best in the game. Fast forward to 2020 and Canha was still an on-base machine, but the encouraging power output from the prior season was nearly gone. Things still look similar in the hard hit department (39.4%), and his groundball rate was even lower than 2019 (33.8% vs. 41%), so his power struggles don't appear to be a result of regression in those two areas. Rather, it appears that Canha wasn't hitting his fly balls and line-drives as well as previously. He lost two miles-per-hour on those batted-ball types from 2019 to 2020, as well as 13 feet of fly ball distance on average, which likely impacted his power output. Overall, Canha still has a very good eye at the plate, and he has one of the lowest chase rates in the game, so he should still be excellent in that department going forward, but for him to have mainstream fantasy appeal, he'll need to recuperate some of that lost power from the 2019 season.
