Diamondbacks to Keep Ryan Waldschmidt at Triple-A Despite Open Starting Role

The Arizona Diamondbacks are not calling up outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt yet for a few reasons, explains Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. The first big reason is that the team expects outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) back for the first time this year after recovering from a torn ACL late last season, so they would have to add Waldschmidt to an already crowded 40-man roster. Then, in another few weeks, Waldschmidt would be chewing up a roster spot in the minors without a path to regular at-bats at the major-league level. The bottom line is that Arizona just isn't ready to have Waldschmidt in the big leagues. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues were hoping that Jordan Lawlar's fractured wrist would prompt the team to let the 23-year-old make his MLB debut. He hit .302 with a homer and six RBI in 14 Cactus League games in spring training and has gone 5-for-22 (.227) with seven RBI in his first six games at Triple-A Reno. Waldschmidt is one of the best prospect outfield stashes in deeper fantasy leagues early on in 2026.

Jordan Lawlar Suffers Fractured Wrist, Set to Miss 6-8 Weeks

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jordan Lawlar (wrist) has been diagnosed with a fractured wrist and is set to miss the next six to eight weeks of action, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The former top prospect hit his first career MLB home run on Thursday evening, but he was also hit by a pitch in his right wrist in this game. Following the contest, Lawlar underwent X-rays, which came back negative. However, a follow-up scan revealed the 23-year-old is dealing with a more serious injury. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks are set to promote catcher Adrian Del Castillo to the major league roster. Lawlar was able to break camp with the MLB roster and has held a solid .333/.400/.556 line with a .956 OPS over his first six contests. While he remains out, fantasy managers should expect Tim Tawa or Jorge Barrosa to see more time in the outfield.

X-Rays for Jordan Lawlar Came Back Negative After Being Hit on the Wrist

Diamondbacks beat writer Jos M. Romero reported on Thursday night that X-rays were negative on Diamondbacks' young star Jordan Lawlar (wrist), who was hit by a pitch on the wrist Thursday night. He will have an additional CT scan on Friday, but the negative results are encouraging news after he exited early in Thursday's contest. He was starting in left field in this contest and was replaced by Tim Tawa after the injury. Before exiting, Lawlar hit his first Major League home run, which was a solo shot in the third inning off of Braves' right-hander, Reynaldo Lopez. Lawlar is off to a good start this season, slashing .333/.400/.556 with one homerun, two RBI, three runs scored, and one stolen base. Fantasy managers will want to wait and hear the news from the CT scan on Friday, but for now, Lawlar should be considered day-to-day.

Ryan Waldschmidt Nearing MLB Debut?

Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt could be nearing his MLB debut as the 2026 campaign gets underway. The D-backs' top-ranked prospect excelled at High-A and Double-A last season, putting together a .289/.419/.473 slash line with 18 home runs and 29 steals in 134 games, and appeared to be on the verge of making the team's Opening Day roster before being sent to Triple-A to begin the year. The former first-rounder slashed .302/.348/.488 in 14 spring games, and although he is just 4-for-18 (.222) at Triple-A to begin the year, the right-handed slugger has also drawn six walks compared to seven strikeouts. If his bat gets hot and there is an opportunity on the big league roster, either due to injury or underperformance, the 23-year-old could be on his way to Arizona. With a solid combination of contact, power, and speed, Waldschmidt is a name to consider stashing away in deeper leagues ahead of his eventual call-up.

Paul Sewald Earns Second Save, Emerging as Arizona's Go-to Ninth-Inning Option

Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Paul Sewald continued his strong start Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers, earning his second save of the season with a clean inning. Sewald struck out the side and has yet to allow a baserunner through 2 1/3 innings of work this year. His early dominance positions him for more opportunities as Arizona works to solidify its closer role. Sewald saw limited innings last season in Detroit, but he has shown the ability to anchor the back end of a bullpen. The 35-year-old owns a 4.09 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 398 career innings and is quickly building momentum in Arizona.

Jose Fernandez Launches Two Home Runs in Historic MLB Debut

Arizona Diamondbacks infield prospect Jose Fernandez went 3-for-4 with two home runs during his MLB debut on Tuesday evening against the Detroit Tigers. Fernandez was promoted to the roster to replace Pavin Smith (elbow), who was placed on the injured list earlier in the day. Fernandez got the start at the hot corner and did not disappoint, launching two long balls. He would hit his first home run off Detroit starter Casey Mize in the fourth inning before hitting the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning off Detroit closer Kenley Jansen. Last summer, Fernandez spent his entire 2025 season with Triple-A Reno, where he posted a .271/.321/.454 slash line with 17 home runs and 12 stolen bases. Given his impressive debut, managers in deeper 12+ team formats should consider adding him as he may carve out a role in this offense.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Playing in Sim Games

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) is playing in simulated games, but manager Torey Lovullo said he won't return until late April, at the earliest, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Gurriel is on the 10-day injured list and is still working his way back from surgery to fix a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered in the outfield on Sept. 11. The 32-year-old was hoping that he'd be ready for Opening Day last week, but the D-backs have slow-played him so that he doesn't have a setback. He has been serving as the designated hitter in minor-league games at the team's spring training complex to get his timing back at the plate. Once he gets the green light to return to the outfield, a minor-league rehab assignment probably won't be far off. The Cuban outfielder should be a lineup regular for the Snakes when he returns, but right now, fantasy managers can leave him on the waiver wire in mixed leagues. Gurriel is rostered in just 3% of Yahoo leagues.

Corbin Burnes  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Corbin Burnes Throws 20-Pitch Bullpen Session

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Burnes is slowly mixing in all of his pitches in two bullpens per week as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The four-time All-Star only made 11 starts in his first year in Arizona in 2025 before being shut down with elbow problems. Burnes isn't expected to make his return in 2026 until sometime in July, but the 31-year-old veteran is a worthy fantasy stash because of the consistency he has displayed in his career as one of the top starters in the game. He was an All-Star for four straight seasons from 2021 to 2024, making at least 28 starts in that span before going down due to injury last year. Before being shut down in 2025, he was looking good again, posting a 2.66 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in 64 1/3 innings. Burnes is rostered in 46% of Yahoo leagues while being on the IL.

Merrill Kelly  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Merrill Kelly Throws Bullpen, to Make Rehab Start on Friday

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly (back), who opened the year on the 15-day injured list with left intercostal nerve irritation, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and will make a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Reno on Friday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The 37-year-old veteran might end up only missing a couple of turns through the rotation in the big leagues to open the 2026 campaign. He'll make another rehab start on April 8, but after that, Kelly could rejoin Arizona's starting rotation to give fantasy managers in deeper leagues another option for starting pitching depth. Kelly ended up making three spring training appearances before his back acted up, allowing nine earned runs on 15 hits (two homers) while walking two and striking out two in 6 1/3 innings. At his age, Kelly's below-average 22% career strikeout rate leaves very little upside, especially in a hitter-friendly home park, but he has won double-digit games in three of the past four seasons. He's rostered in 64% of Yahoo leagues despite his early-season injury.

Michael Soroka  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Michael Soroka Deals in First Start of the Year

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Michael Soroka looked really good against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night for his first win of the 2026 season, and he even recorded an immaculate inning along the way in the team's 9-6 win in the desert. Soroka threw five shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out 10 Tigers hitters. There's no telling what Soroka could have done had the D-backs allowed him to keep going, but with the season young, Arizona pulled the 28-year-old at 89 pitches. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues are probably going to want to see more from the Canadian hurler, especially in a hitter-friendly home environment. Soroka was an All-Star in his second year in the majors in 2019 with the Atlanta Braves, but that was his only season in six years where he has gone over the 100-inning mark. The D-backs will likely continue to handle Soroka with care, too, which will limit his fantasy ceiling.

Paul Sewald Earns First Save of 2026

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Monday, earning the save in his team's 9-6 win over the Detroit Tigers. He struck out one batter en route to securing his first save of the 2026 season. It's been a small sample size of just 1.1 innings so far this year for Sewald, but so far, he's been productive. He has retired all four batters he's faced, and he has an impressive 76.5% strike rate. That rate might not be sustainable, but still, it's encouraging to see him find the zone with such consistency. We're also intrigued that the average fastball velocity has jumped to 92.2 mph, which is his highest mark since 2023. If he can continue to earn saves, limit walks, and generally pitch effectively, he'll soar higher than his current rank as the #28 reliever in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Diamondbacks Place Pavin Smith on 10-Day Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Monday that they placed infielder Pavin Smith (elbow) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 29) with left-elbow inflammation and recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Veteran Carlos Santana is starting at first base on Monday against the visiting Detroit Tigers and right-hander Justin Verlander, and he should see most of the playing time there with Smith on the injured list. Meanwhile, Ildemaro Vargas is the designated hitter and will bat eighth on Monday. Expect the Snakes to rotate at DH among Vargas, Tim Tawa, Fernandez, and Jorge Barrosa with Smith on the shelf for at least 10 days. Smith isn't dealing with any structural damage in his elbow, but it's something that has been bothering him since spring training. It's unclear if he'll return when eligible on April 8. In his two games played in the opening series against the Dodgers, Smith went 1-for-6 with an RBI, run scored, two walks, and two strikeouts at the plate.

Pavin Smith Returning to Lineup After Missing Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith (elbow) is back in the starting lineup after taking batting practice for Friday's contest on the road against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Emmet Sheehan, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Smith will serve as the team's designated hitter and will bat fifth after he missed the Opening Day loss on Thursday due to elbow soreness. An MRI exam on the 30-year-old left-handed hitter came back negative, allowing him to return to action. Smith is entering his seventh MLB season and has only had double-digit home runs once, back in 2021, when he had 11 homers and 49 RBI in 145 games played. That year was also the only time in six seasons that Smith has played in over 100 games. In 2026, he will compete for playing time between first base and designated hitter, and he's likely to continue to sit against lefties, which will keep his fantasy ceiling limited. Smith has never faced Sheehan in his MLB career.

Pavin Smith Scratched on Thursday Evening With Elbow Soreness

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith (elbow) has been scratched from the Opening Day lineup on Thursday evening against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers due to left-elbow soreness, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. The Diamondbacks don't believe that Smith's elbow injury is serious, so he could be right back in the lineup on Friday night in L.A. Tim Tawa will make the start at designated hitter in place of Smith for the Snakes versus Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Smith has earned regular at-bats in Arizona between first base and designated hitter after hitting .262/.357/.475 with an .832 OPS, 17 home runs, 64 RBI, and 62 runs scored in 147 games and 446 plate appearances over the last two seasons. However, he had a career-high 31.9% strikeout rate in 2025 and has just a .597 career OPS against left-handed pitchers. It's a limited fantasy ceiling for Smith. UPDATE: Smith will have an MRI exam on his left elbow on Friday.

Jordan Lawlar Starting in Left Field for Arizona on Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks infield/outfield prospect Jordan Lawlar is officially an Opening Day starter in 2026, batting ninth and playing left field for his team's first game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lawlar has long been considered one of the Diamondbacks' top prospects, but he's struggled with injuries and hit just .182/.257/.288 with a 35.8% strikeout rate across 74 plate appearances after making his MLB debut in 2025. Lawlar also had some defensive issues while spending time at every infield position other than first base, leading the Diamondbacks to shift him to the outfield this spring. Still, Lawlar will not turn 24 years old until July and posted a .967 OPS across 300 Triple-A plate appearances in 2025. With Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) currently working his way back from a torn ACL, Lawlar could have an extended run of everyday playing time to open 2026.

Ketel Marte  • 2B  •  Diamondbacks

Ketel Marte Active, Leading Off on Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (lower leg) is in the lineup and batting leadoff for his team's Opening Day matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. Marte was scratched from Arizona's exhibition finale on Tuesday due to lower-leg soreness, but it appears the 32-year-old has avoided a serious issue. Marte is coming off an excellent 2025 season in which he hit .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs, 72 RBI, 87 runs scored, and four stolen bases across 556 plate appearances. When healthy, Marte is arguably the premier second baseman in all of baseball. However, the veteran switch-hitter does have a fairly extensive injury history, reaching 600 plate appearances just twice in 11 MLB seasons. Fantasy managers can breathe a bit easier now that Marte is officially good to go for the start of 2026.

Paul Sewald the Favorite for Saves in Arizona?

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he'd be "foolish" not to consider veteran right-hander Paul Sewald for save chances this year with both Justin Martinez (elbow) and A.J. Puk (elbow) on the injured list to begin the 2026 season, according to 12 News' Cameron Cox. Lovullo mentioned Sewald's experience at the back of the bullpen in his career, as the 35-year-old has 86 saves over his nine major-league seasons with five different teams. He certainly isn't a slam-dunk saves candidate for the D-backs or for fantasy managers, though, as he posted a weak 4.58 ERA (4.66 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP, two saves, 20 strikeouts, and six walks in just 19 2/3 innings in 2025 with the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers. Sewald should be the Diamondbacks' first choice for save chances to begin the year, but Kevin Ginkel and Ryan Thompson could also be sprinkled in, and this could quickly evolve if Sewald struggles. Fantasy managers are better off staying away.

Justin Martinez  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

Justin Martinez Throwing on Flat Ground

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) is still throwing on flat ground up to 120 feet, according to Arizona Sports' Alex Weiner. Martinez underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on June 25 of last year and will open the 2026 season on the 60-day injured list. In a best-case scenario, he won't be available to return to high-leverage duties at the back end of Arizona's bullpen until the second half of the season. Fellow reliever A.J. Puk (elbow), who had an internal-brace procedure on his left arm, is slightly ahead of Martinez and is throwing short bullpen sessions. With both Martinez and Puk out for the first half of the season, veteran Paul Sewald might be the favorite for saves in the desert. The 24-year-old Martinez has 13 saves for Arizona in the last two seasons and is probably the team's preferred closer when healthy, but he could very well be eased back into high-leverage duties in the second half this year when he's back.
Mar 25
A.J. Puk  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

A.J. Puk Throwing Short Bullpens

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed reliever A.J. Puk (elbow) has started throwing "shortbox bullpens," which means the catcher sets up closer to the pitcher, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Puk is opening the 2026 regular season on the 60-day injured list after having an internal-brace procedure on his left elbow on June 20 of last year. Barring a setback, he's expected to return to the D-backs' bullpen around the All-Star break in mid-July. With fellow reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) also recovering from Tommy John surgery, Arizona's bullpen will be very vulnerable in the first half of the season. Veteran Paul Sewald could be the favorite for save opportunities, but manager Torey Lovullo could also mix and match with arms like Taylor Clarke, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Kevin Ginkel. It's truly a bullpen situation that fantasy managers should be looking to avoid, if at all possible.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to Play in Minor-League Games

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) will play in minor-league games soon as a designated hitter, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Gurriel has taken part in defensive drills and shagging, but he has yet to play the outfield in a game this spring. He's getting close to playing on defense, though. "Defensively is the next piece of the puzzle because you're gonna be chasing a baseball and you can't predict what your body's gonna need to do, what start-stop action you're gonna have with your lower half," manager Torey Lovullo said. "So we're getting very close to that." Gurriel tore the ACL in his right knee on Sept. 1 of last year and underwent surgery on Sept. 11. The 32-year-old veteran was hoping that he'd be ready for Opening Day, but that was never a realistic target date for his return. The D-backs are hoping that he can make his 2026 debut in early May. In mixed leagues, fantasy managers can leave Gurriel on the waiver wire to begin the season.
