Justin Reid News
The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million deal with $20 million guaranteed on Monday, according to a source. The Chiefs now have some insurance in case Tyrann Mathieu goes elsewhere in free agency. Reid may not have the ceiling or instincts that Mathieu has, but he can at least be a serviceable safety in KC's secondary. The 25-year-old former third-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2018 had 66 tackles (41 solo), two interceptions, four passes defensed and a forced fumble in 13 games played for Houston in 2021. In his four NFL seasons with Houston, Reid has 315 total tackles (230 solo), 11 tackles for loss, six QB hits, seven interceptions (one touchdown), 23 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two sacks in 57 games (53 starts).
The Houston Texans have had dialogue with defensive back Justin Reid ahead of free agency and are in open talks about a new contract. He is set to become a free agent after his $2.443 million rookie deal with Houston has expired. "I've talked to his representatives, we've had some dialogue," Texans general manager Nick Caserio said Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "I'm certainly open to bringing Justin back. Justin is a good player. He's well thought of around the league. I know he has a lot of respect for head coach Lovie Smith. He had an opportunity to play in his system. If he has an opportunity to come back here, it's another year in the same system." The 25-year-old racked up 66 tackles, two interceptions, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble over 13 games in 2021. Reid and the Texans will work something out on a return but expect the safety to draw plenty of interest from NFL teams if he should hit free agency.
The Houston Texans placed veteran safety Justin Reid on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday, raising the likelihood that the Week 17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers was his final game with the team. Reid is in the final year of his contract and isn't expected to return as a free agent during the offseason. If he doesn't play in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Houston Texans, the 24-year-old will finish the year with 66 tackles (41 solo), two interceptions, four passes defensed and a forced fumble in 13 games. The Texans also put safeties Jonathan Owens (wrist) and Grayland Arnold (ankle) on Injured Reserve, so they could be short-handed on Sunday against the current top seed in the AFC, the Tennessee Titans.
