Mike Clevinger News
The Chicago White Sox recalled right-hander Mike Clevinger from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday and placed right-hander Dominic Leone (back) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 5) with lower-back tightness in a corresponding move. After re-signing with the White Sox late after the start of the regular season, Clevinger is finally ready to make his 2024 debut in the majors after giving up three runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings over two minor-league starts with Charlotte. Fantasy managers should not expect him to go deep in Monday's contest, making him a poor streaming option in his first start of 2024. The 33-year-old isn't the high-upside he pitcher he once was in Cleveland, but he can be serviceable in deeper leagues and as a streamer in the right matchups.
Chicago White Sox right-hander Mike Clevinger is starting for Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday night. This will be Clevinger's first minor-league start after previously pitching in extended spring training to try and get stretched out after re-signing with the club on a one-year deal on April 2. The 33-year-old is scheduled to throw four innings or 60 pitches on Thursday and then move to five innings or 75 pitches in his next minor-league start. If Clevinger looks good after those two outings on the farm, he could be called up to the big-league roster and start make his 2024 debut for the White Sox early in May. The former fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 went 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while striking out 110 and walking 40 in 24 starts for Chicago last year. He'll be a deep-league streaming option, at best, once he returns to the majors.
Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz said that the expectation is to have right-hander Mike Clevinger in uniform around May 1. The White Sox officially announced the signing of Clevinger to a one-year, $3 million deal on Thursday. They optioned him to the Arizona Complex League so that he can build up his arm. When he's ready, the 33-year-old veteran will slot into Chicago's starting rotation as their No. 5 starter. But until then, it appears the team will go with a bullpen game every fifth day. The former fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 went 9-9 for the Pale Hose in 2023 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 40 walks and 110 strikeouts in 131 1/3 innings over 24 starts. Clevinger is no longer an upper-tier fantasy starter like he was with Cleveland due to durability and consistency issues, but he'll be in play as a matchup-based streamer and as rotation depth in AL-only leagues.
