J.T. Realmuto News
Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (knee) will return to Wednesday's starting lineup against the New York Mets, barring anything unexpected, according to manager Rob Thomson. Realmuto was held out of action for a third straight game due to right-knee soreness in Tuesday's shutout win over the New York Mets but he should be back in there for the third game of the series on Wednesday. Fantasy baseball managers will want to get the 33-year-old veteran backstop back in all starting lineups on Wednesday, as he's still one of the best offensive-minded catchers in the game. Realmuto is hitting .364 (12-for-33) in the month of May in eight games and is currently riding a six-game hitting streak in which he's gone 11-for-26 with no homers and one RBI.
Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (knee) is out of the starting lineup once again on Tuesday versus the New York Mets. Garrett Stubbs is behind the plate again and is batting ninth against Mets right-hander Jose Butto. Although Realmuto is missing his third straight game with a right-knee injury, manager Rob Thomson said that Realmuto's knee is feeling better and he was able to do some work on the field and in the batting cage prior to Tuesday's game. However, the 33-year-old isn't a lock to return to action on Wednesday, so fantasy managers may have to wait another day or to get him back. Stubbs is a poor DFS choice at the catching position, especially while hitting ninth. He's currently hitting just 4-for-30 (.133) on the year with no home runs and one RBI.
Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (knee) is out of the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Realmuto will be missing his second straight game after missing Sunday's contest with a sore right knee. With Realmuto still resting up, Garrett Stubbs will make a second straight start to catch left-hander Cristopher Sanchez while batting ninth against Mets left-hander Sean Manaea. Realmuto's knee injury isn't considered serious, so fantasy managers should treat him as day-to-day and check back on Tuesday to see if he's feeling good enough to play. When active, he's a must-start, top-tier fantasy catching option. Stubbs has never faced Manaea in his career and will be a low-upside DFS play. He's gone just 3-for-26 (.115) on the year with no home runs. Realmuto is dealing with what he described as "soreness" in his right knee. He felt it on his triple on May 4 against the Giants, and it hasn't gotten better. He hasn't had any tests yet and said he's hopeful of being able to play in the next few days. Realmuto isn't concerned yet about it turning into an injured-list situation.

J.T. Realmuto had a down year by his lofty standards in 2023, hitting .252/.310/.452 with 20 HR and 16 SB over 540 PAs. The good news is that most of his underlying peripherals were virtually unchanged from more productive seasons. His average airborne exit velocity increased from 94.4 mph in 2022 to 95 last season, while his rate of Brls/BBE (11.3% VS. 11.2%) and max exit velocity (110.4 vs. 110.6) were virtually identical. Similarly, Realmuto posted a 28.7 ft./sec Statcast Sprint speed in both 2022 and 2023. The one troubling trend in his profile is plate discipline, as Realmuto's 25.6 K% was five points higher than his career mark of 20.6% while his SwStr% increased by nearly two ticks (12.1 vs. 10.2). Realmuto's biggest problem from a fantasy perspective is that more catchers can hit these days. At an ADP of 71.63, Realmuto is sandwiched between Eury Perez (70.83) and Kodai Senga (71.97), two arms with the ceiling of an ace. A .250 hitter with 20 HR and 15 SB can't compete with that even with catcher eligibility, especially since Realmuto is expected to hit toward the bottom of Philadelphia's lineup.
