Joe Musgrove News
San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) is aiming to return from the 15-day injured list this weekend to start on Sunday in Atlanta against the Braves. Musgrove threw a bullpen session on Monday and was expected to throw another one on Wednesday, and it looks like he's shown enough to convince the Padres that he doesn't need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to the starting rotation. The 31-year-old veteran went on the injured list on May 5 with right-elbow inflammation and was 3-3 with an elevated 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over his eight starts to begin 2024. Although Musgrove looked much better in his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds, fantasy managers will be rolling the dice if they go with him in his first start off the IL on Sunday against the strong offense of the Braves.
San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) threw a light bullpen session on Monday, marking the first time he'd done so since he was placed on the 15-day injured list after his May 1 start due to right-elbow inflammation. Musgrove is scheduled for another bullpen on Wednesday, with manager Mike Shildt noting that if all goes well, Musgrove is trending toward making his return during the team's series from May 17-20 in Atlanta against the Braves. Musgrove has had a tough season to this point, sporting a 6.37 ERA in eight starts, but his most recent outing was his sharpest, when he gave up just two runs and struck out nine in six innings of work against the Cincinnati Reds. The 31-year-old veteran still has time to turn things around and should be plucked off the waiver wire if he's available in your league, although starting him this weekend if he returns to face the Braves would be a risky proposition.
San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) was able to play catch at Petco Park on Friday after having some imaging done on his right elbow. Everything came out looking good on his tests, and he's still expecting a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list. It's the first time that Musgrove has played catch since landing on the injured list last Sunday with right-elbow inflammation. If he doesn't have any setback, the 31-year-old veteran could return to the Padres' starting rotation next Friday. Fantasy managers probably will want to avoid throwing him right back into their starting lineups when he returns. After finishing last year on the sidelines due to an injury, Musgrove has gone 3-3 with a bloated 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with a league-high 10 home runs allowed, 13 walks and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over eight starts.

After making the All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2022, San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove only made 17 starts in 2023 and was shut down in late July due to a shoulder injury. The 31-year-old also dealt with a toe injury. The good news is that despite his injury-plagued season, Musgrove was basically the same pitcher he was in his first two years in San Diego. He went 10-3 with a 3.05 ERA (3.52 FIP), 1.14 WHIP, 21 walks and 97 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings pitched. He was working his way back late in the year, but when the Padres were eliminated from playoff contention, the Padres decided to shut him down entirely and let him get an early start on rehabbing in the offseason. Musgrove is one of just five starting pitchers in the big leagues that has had an ERA below 3.20 in each of the last three seasons, and he's also had double-digit wins in each of the last three seasons despite making only 17 starts last year. Musgrave has most likely reached his peak in terms of statistical performance, but when he's healthy, he's a low-risk starter for fantasy managers in a friendly pitcher's park at Petco. Heading into the 2024 season, though, he'll carry more risk because of his shoulder injury and should be considered a solid No. 3 fantasy starter. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 32 starting pitcher, while ATS projects Musgrove to break his streak of ERAs lower than 3.20 with a 3.62 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 162 innings pitched.
