Jake McCarthy News
Arizona Diamondbacks designated hitter Joc Pederson and outfielder Jake McCarthy are both out of the lineup on Monday against left-hander James Paxton and the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a result, rookie infielder Blaze Alexander is the DH and is batting leadoff, while outfielder Randal Grichuk is in right field and hitting sixth in the batting order. Pederson is hitting a nice .296 (16-for-54) to begin his first season with the D-backs, but he's been afforded just three at-bats against left-handers. Alexander has really impressed so far in his first season in the big leagues and will be a pretty attractive DFS option in the leadoff spot on Monday. Grichuk will be more of a deep sleeper in daily lineups, but he does have a homer and two RBI while hitting .267 against Paxton in 15 career at-bats.
The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Jake McCarthy from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. McCarthy isn't in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the New York Mets, but he'll provide the Snakes with some extra outfield depth down the stretch as they look to hang onto the final wild-card spot in the National League. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter and thrower struggled in his time with Arizona over 86 games before being sent down, hitting .245/.325/.331 with only two home runs, 14 RBI, 26 stolen bases and 33 runs scored in 291 plate appearances. However, he was tearing the cover off the ball at Reno in 45 games and could provide fantasy managers with some stolen bases in deeper leagues to close out the 2023 season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Jake McCarthy to Triple-A Reno on Monday and recalled outfielder Kyle Lewis from the minors in a corresponding move. Lewis is serving as the designated hitter for Arizona and is batting fifth in the lineup on Monday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The 26-year-old McCarthy has a career-high 26 stolen bases in 257 at-bats in his third major-league season, but he's struggled in the other aspects of his game and will go down to the farm for the second time this year before likely returning when rosters expand in September. McCarthy is slashing .245/.325/.331 with only two homers, 14 RBI and 33 runs scored. He had picked up just five hits in 26 at-bats (.192) to begin the month of August in 11 games (eight starts).

After an unprecedented breakout in his rookie season, outfielder Jake McCarthy has become a sign of hope for the meddling Arizona Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old got straight to work in his first season in the pros, and he's veering toward the "perennial talent" category if he continues to impress. McCarthy owned a .283/.342/.427 triple line with a 118 OPS+ this past year, and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. His strikeout numbers aren't where they should be (21.9%), and it wouldn't hurt to invest in some discipline. We can't determine his future as a power hitter just yet, but unless he puts on some muscle mass, he'll likely stick to his bat-to-ball technique. Although Steamer's projections aren't too appealing, he's only expected to slash .254/.319/.404. McCarthy is most certainly capable of exceeding those numbers. That's when NFBC perks up and gives a 121.13 ADP which is a better estimate of his capability.
