Ezequiel Tovar News
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is on the bench for the first time this season on Sunday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Tovar started the Rockies' first 33 games of the year and is currently hitting .258/.303/.379 with three home runs, seven doubles, 12 RBI, three stolen bases and 13 runs scored in 143 plate appearances to start his third season in the big leagues. The day off comes at a good time, as the free-swinging 22-year-old shortstop has struggled at the plate of late, going 5-for-39 (.128) with no homers, no RBI, two walks and 16 strikeouts in his last nine games since April 24. The Rockies have a scheduled off day on Monday, so Tovar will next play on Tuesday against the visiting San Francisco Giants. Alan Trejo is at the 6 on Sunday and is hitting ninth against Pirates left-hander Bailey Falter.
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar has reportedly signed a long-term extension with the organization on Sunday. It's a seven-year deal with a club option for the 2031 season. Tovar could earn up to $84 million if the team does exercise his option. The young infielder was fairly productive through his first big league season. Tovar slashed .253/.287/.408 with 15 homers, 73 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. The organization is hopeful that Tovar will take a step forward offensively in 2024. It appears that the Rockies believe Tovar is the future at shortstop and he very well could be if he keeps progressing.
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is enjoying a big spring training at the plate as he looks forward to his sophomore season. The 22-year-old has gone 7-for-13 with two home runs, one double, five runs, seven RBI, and a 1.610 OPS on the spring across 15 trips to the plate. The youngster put forth a solid rookie season from a counting-stats perspective as he hit 15 home runs with 79 runs, 73 RBI, and 11 stolen bases across 153 games a season ago. However, he walked in just 5.7% of his plate appearances and his 70 wRC+ fell 30% below the league average. He remains a nice fantasy option in the 2024 season as he is projected to hit 16 home runs with 13 stolen bases and 76 runs scored by ATC. Of course, playing half of your games at the hitter-friendly Coors Field is an added bonus to his fantasy value.

On the surface, Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar's 2023 season was lackluster, with a .253-15-73-79-11 line with a .298 WOBA and 70 wRC+. However, when you view it as compared with other shortstops, he totaled the second-most doubles and was Top-10 in hits, runs, and RBI. If it weren't for his poor April and July, he would have had a much more respectable .270 BA, and the righty even had a 15-game hit streak in the middle of the season. This was despite his 31.3% Whiff% and 2nd percentile Chase% of 42.0%. ATC projections foresee a .263-16-71-79-13 season with a .311 WOBA and 79 wRC+. Going at the end of drafts with an NFBC ADP of 195, he won't cost you much, and RotoBaller ranks him a bit higher at 176, so there could be some value there. If you're looking for additional reasons to buy, he's still 22 years old and plays his home games in the thin air of Coors Field, so there's room for his numbers to grow.
