Brayan Bello News
The Boston Red Sox reinstated right-hander Brayan Bello (lat) from the 15-day injured list on Sunday and optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester after Saturday's game in a corresponding move. Bello will return to the mound on Mother's Day to start on Sunday versus the visiting Washington Nationals. The 24-year-old was initially put on the injured list on April 24 with right-lat tightness. In his lone minor-league rehab start for Double-A Portland on Tuesday, Bello gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out five in just 2 2/3 innings. Bello went 3-1 with a solid 3.04 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in his five starts before going on the shelf and he'll have a good matchup against the Nationals, but the fact he only went 2 2/3 frames in his lone rehab start probably makes him a low-upside fantasy play in his first start back on Sunday.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (lat) said he feels great and is pain-free and is ready to start on Sunday at Fenway Park against the visiting Washington Nationals. We'll see what the Red Sox have to say about that after Bello allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out five batters in only 2 2/3 innings in a minor-league rehab start for Double-A Portland on Tuesday. The good news is that Bello feels fully healthy, but even if he's activated from the injured list and returns on Sunday in a good matchup against the Nats, he'll be a shaky fantasy option for Sunday's slate of games in his first start back. Before landing on the IL, the 24-year-old had a nice 3.04 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 26 strikeouts in 26 2/3 frames over five starts. If Bello is on your league's waiver wire, scoop him up.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (lat) will make a minor-league rehab start with Double-A Portland on Tuesday. Bello has been out the last two weeks with right-lat tightness, but he threw a bullpen session this week and has now been cleared for live game action. If the 24-year-old looks good during his rehab start next week, he could be cleared for activation from the injured list when he's eligible on May 12 to make a start against the Washington Nationals. The Dominican starter was a popular breakout candidate coming into the 2024 season and was looking good before his lat injury, going 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA (4.04 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with seven walks and 26 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings of work in his first five starts. Bello should remain stashed in all fantasy formats.

Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello has had himself a fine offseason. The 24-year-old signed a shiny six-year, $55 million contract and was also named the club's Opening Day starter. As a result, he's been in the headlines plenty this winter but the brakes need to be pumped when it comes to his fantasy value. Bello worked to a solid 4.24 ERA across 28 starts in 2023, posting a 13% K-BB% in the process. That strikeout-to-walk figure was only buoyed by a quality 6.7% BB% as Bello struck out just 19.8% of the hitters he faced a season ago. With a 20% K% through his first 41 outings (39 starts) and 214 1/3 big-league frames, he has yet to put away hitters like he did at big-time rates in the minors. As a result, his value lies in dynasty leagues while he continues to develop. Redraft managers should be cautious with what appears to be an overvalued 226.10 ADP.
